Blue Bamboo has been quite the adventure over the last year – we’ve grown from a one man operation to 7 employees and gaining. In this time we’ve learned a lot about creating great application and great business relationships. I’ve wanted to try and summarize my experience into a few key points for a while, so here goes nothing:

1. Stay well within your comfort zones. You have your comfort zones – how much you want to make, what kind of work you want to do, how fast you can deliver. If you stay within them you’ll be satisfied and work well. If you leave your comfort zone and there are problems down the road you wont have any room to maneuver, which often results in bad feelings from both sides.

2. Be Authentic. Know exactly what your capabilities are and what you have yet to learn, own up to mistakes when you make them. Authenticity builds confidence and trust.

3. Float and deal with problems immediately. There will always be problems, and when they don’t get dealt with they become bigger problems.

yad2 is Israel's third largest website, with over 500,000 classified ads.

Update (13.1.10): version 2.0 is in development and will include location based search and other great new features.

Update (26.12.09): yad2 is the #2 most downloaded app in Israel 48 hours after release.
……….

yad2 is Israel’s third largest internet business. It serves close to half a million classified ads and has millions of visitors a month. Finding stuff on yad2 involves entering quite a bit of information, which is usually awful on mobile phones. Our challenge then was to implement a comfortable, intuitive search interface which gets result fast.

Here’s a concept sketch of the search screen we eventually came up with. Tap the parameter name you want to edit (like ‘Area’), and flick the scrollwheel to the desired value. The parameter cell visually reinforces the selected value (’Tel Aviv’ in this case). Simple!

And here’s how it was then implemented

The premise for this app was very simple - allow Israeli iPhone users to listen to their favorite radio stations.

Update (02.1.10): Israel Radio was updated with new stations and a fresh look

Update (30.12.09): Israel Radio has completed 4 months as the top paid application in Israel
……….

Israel Radio is the most successful commercial application in Israel. After 4 months at the top of the charts, the app has an install base of tens of thousands of users. Israel Radio is a great example of work we love – turning an idea into a successful product. Our client’s wish was simple: let Israelis listen to the radio on their iPhones. The rest was up to us.
